  Abakwa is an isiXhosa drama that speaks about a young girl from a disadvantaged background who lives day by day overcoming the disease of HIV.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 2. 'Nothing But The Truth', Avi

 Nothing But The Truth starts with an incident that happened at Harrison High  School in  New Hampshire, USA, where Philip Maloy, a high school student, is  suspended from  school after humming the American national anthem. The  story is written through diary  entries, personal letters, school memo's and  transcripts of dialogue, and deals with the  issue of truth and how the truth  changes depending on what a person believes.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 3. Animal Farm, George Orwell

 Animal Farm is an allegorical novel, which is a story or poem that is used to symbolize a real life event or concept. The story is about a farm where the animals revolt against the farmer, which is used as a metaphor for the Russian Revolution of 1917. The farm animals can talk  and understand each other, and overthrow the farmer of Manor Farm The pigs take power, and there is a power struggle on how the farm should be run. Each animal starts to represent a part of human society.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 4. 'Long Walk to Freedom', Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela

Long Walk to Freedom is an autobiography (a book about a person written by that  person) by the former President of South Africa, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. The book  follows the journey of Madiba's life from a young age until after his 27 years in prison on  Robben Island, Cape Town. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

5. 'Whitney's Kiss', Onne Vegter

​Whitney starts to get involved in a teenage relationship, but she is warned against some of the consequences of taking things to far by her teacher Mrs. Pillay. The story comes face to face with the reality of HIV and AIDS, and deals with teenage issues like love and betrayal.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

6. Lord of the Rings', J.R.R Tolkien

Lord of the Rings is a trilogy about a fantastical journey in a place called Middle Earth, where elves, dwarves, wizards and hobbits live amongst humans. We follow the story of the hobbit Frodo, who must destroy a magical ring before the evil Lord Sauron takes it and uses it to gain more power.

 

 

 

 

 

 

7. Liefde is 'n Sprokie, Santie Nel

A collection of Afrikaans short stories that deal with love and relationships for teenagers. Each story is based on a well-known fairy tale with a modern twist!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

8. Kwezi Series, Loyiso Mkize

A graphic novel that focuses on Kwezi, a super hero from Johannesburg that has incredible powers. While trying to save the world, Kwezi also enjoys living life to the fullest like any other student.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

9. Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling

The Harry Potter series follows the school journey of Harry Potter, a young boy who discovers he is a wizard and is sent off to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. While trying to pass his exams with his friends Hermione and Ron Weasley, he also has to defend his life from the evil Lord Voldemort, who is bent on killing him and taking control of the wizarding world.
