Seeing that it is culture shock week I thought I'd share some of my traditions.
Being coloured is not just my race but it's also a big part of who I am and I am so proud of it.
One thing I love about my culture is the way we speak. A lot of people refer to it as the wrong way to speak but I couldn't care less. It's unique to us and the language of my closest family and friends and I wouldn't change it for the world.
Just because we speak a certain way does not mean we aren't intellegent and smart people.
I can speak european english and I can speak Afrikaans but I feel at home and most confidant speaking Afrikaaps.
"As djy nie wietie nou wiet djy"!
The other thing that I really adore is the FOOD!!!
Yes,in our culture food plays a big part just like any other culture but it's the type of food and the way in which it is prepared that gets me all excited.
For example :
- A Smoortjie: A pan fried smorgasbord of deliciousness!
- Pickled Fish: A favourite during Easter time
- Gatsby: The Cape Town take on a sub sandwich, filled with anything and everything (but most importantly fried chips!)
And the people...
I love their passion , their drive and their energy.
We are not lazy , we work just as hard as any other person do. I do not care what people might say about our, MY culture...I am proud of who and what I am.
Remember, be proud of who you are because it sustains you for your journey to come.
I am proud...Are you? Let me know what makes you proud of YOUR Culture in the Comments below!
