Make every day a Mandela day

Nelson R Mandela was a legend in his own time, not just to South Africa but around the entire world. He spent the better part of his life trying to make the world a better place. That is saying a lot for a man who lived to the age of 95 and never stopped trying to make the world a better place.

As South Africans we strive to live up to the legacy that Madiba left behind for us and Mandela day is just one day out of the year we try and give back to the world that raised us. However, just like you should spread good will year round and not just on Christmas we should also try and make every day a Mandela day in whatever way we can.

There are loads of different ways we can make a small difference in the world like volunteer work, donating clothing or books among others but really all that is needed is a random act of kindness. Mandela was all about people helping people and how better to do that than doing something small that will make someone else happy, just cause. Buy an extra sweet at the tuck-shop and give it to someone who doesn’t have one, help someone who is struggling in class or just open the door and say good morning to someone random to brighten up their day and make them feel special.

Utata didn’t expect us all to hold the weight of the world on our shoulders and fix it overnight. The key is for everyone to chip in, even if just a little bit each day and we can all share the load an work together to improve the future because when everyone is helping everyone else then what could stop us?
