3 More diseases found in Africa

If you’ve been keeping up with the show, then you’ll know we talked this week about some diseases found in Africa. Since we want you to stay informed here are 3 more of the most widespread diseases in Africa

Tetanus

Tetanus is a serious disease caused by a bacterial toxin that affects your nervous system, leading to painful muscle contractions, particularly of your jaw and neck muscles. Tetanus can interfere with your ability to breathe and can threaten your life. Tetanus is commonly known as "lockjaw."

Malaria fact: Malaria exists in 103 countries worldwide, affecting 3.3. billion people, but about 90% of malaria-related deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa.

Whooping cough

Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a highly contagious infection of the respiratory tract. In many people, it's marked by a severe hacking cough followed by a high-pitched intake of breath that sounds like "whoop” which is where it gets its name from.

Pneumonia fact: Pneumonia can have more than 30 different causes.

Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis (TB) is a potentially serious infectious disease that mainly affects your lungs. The bacteria that cause tuberculosis are spread from one person to another through tiny droplets released into the air via coughs and sneezes.

Diarrhea facts: People with diarrhea caused by certain infections can lose up to 20 litres of fluids per day.

We hope that you all feel more informed about some of the diseases that can be found in Africa. Knowing what these diseases are can greatly improve the chances of avoiding contracting these diseases.
