Osteoporosis is a disease that affects young and old. As the teen years are an important time for young people as this is when our bodies are producing more bones than any other point in life. Therefore, it is important for young people to understand what will help them grow strong and what can help reduce the chances of illnesses like osteoporosis. So, here are 3 tips to prevent osteoporosis.
· Get rid of the cold-drink
According to research one reason drinking cola or other sugary drinks impacts bone density, which is the amount of tissue in your bones. Additionally, people who drink sugary drinks regularly are less likely to invest in drinking beverages with calcium such as milk. Did you know in one can of cold-drink there are 10 teaspoons of sugar?
Fun fact: The word "osteoporosis" comes from the Greek words "osteon" meaning bone, and "poros", meaning a pore or a passage.
· Cut down the protein
Did you know that animal protein (meat) tends to take calcium from the bones? When we digest meat, the amino acids cause our bones to dissolve into the blood stream. Therefore, while protein is important for the body, it should be taken in in moderation.
Fun fact: Caucasians and Asians have a higher risk of developing osteoporosis than other people do.
· Up the calcium
Calcium is important as it's a major building-block of our bone tissue. Did you know that our skeletons house 99 % of our body's calcium? Calcium can also be found outside of dairy products like milk, these products are canned fish, lentils and soy-based products.
Fun fact: Osteoporosis can be prevented by, among others, eating a diet rich in calcium (1000 – 1500mg/day) when you are young. This will make sure you reach peak bone mineral density.
