
Dikembe Mutombo
Dikembe Mutombo Mpolondo Mukamba
Jean-Jacques Wamutombo, more commonly Dikembe Mutombo is a Congolese born professional basketball player
who has been in the American NBA for the past 17 years.
Regarded as one of the
greatest shot blockers and defensive players of all
time, Mutombo has won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year
Award four times. He trails only fellow Houston Rockets player, the
retired Hakeem Olajuwon in career blocks with 3,230. At age 41, he is currently
the second oldest player in the NBA (44-year-old Kevin Willis
who is with the Dallas Mavericks is the oldest). Mutombo is 7
feet 2 inches tall (218 centimetres) and weighs 260 pounds (118 kilograms). He
is a member of the Luba ethnic group and speaks fluent Luba,
Lingala, French and English.
Interviewed at the beginning of this, his 17th and final season, Mutombo said: "I am going enjoy every second and every minute of my last year...I hope my farewell tour will be a nice memorable one."
